About Bigwitch Indian Wisdom Initiative from Tyson Sampson, a member of the WNC Band of Cherokee.
The Bigwitch Indian Wisdom Initiative (BIWI) is a wave of traditions inspired by this mountainous landscape. Named after their Matrilineal family name, Bigwitch! BIWI is Currently helping people locally to access Ecological (wild harvested) family foods, language, & herbology traditions; we demonstrate the importance of local indigenous knowlege and share some narratives throughout the WNC region. It is noteworthy to learn the Cherokee historical narrative of this region. We believe in “The Old Ways”!
Accomplishing enough action to do everything (many projects from documenting ethnobotanical information, teaching the values of food traditions to current generations, and developing resources that incorporate the use of the Cherokee language) can be networked/supported via a myriad of grassroots endeavors/sister groups/ individuals who seek to honor the beautiful painted earth beneath our healing/dancing feet!
It is our inherent responsibility as stewards of these mountains to lead the way for our own relatives to maintain and restore our old ways, especially through wild/fresh food sovereignty and indigenous language.
“Gadoogee” is the spirit of collaboration and cooperation! This is not a solo vision, it requires a collective to do the good work giving back to our ancestors the honor of this Mother land and its cosmological narrative.
